Sleep Apnea

Sleep Apnea

Dental treatment for your airways

Sleep apnea has a profound impact on your physical and emotional wellness, depriving you of regenerative slumber. Loud, chronic snoring is often a symptom of a serious medical condition called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

Depending on severity, you may never reach deep REM sleep, essential for hormonal balance that revitalizes mind and body.

Conventional CPAP therapy is effective, when it is used. Many people cannot sleep well wearing a mask, tethered to a mechanical device.

We offer a comfortable, discreet alternative: a custom-fitted oral appliance about the size of an orthodontic retainer. It holds the mouth slightly open, positioning the jaw a bit forward to depress the tongue and keep the airway open. Many patients get full relief from OSA with oral appliance therapy.

Health Implications

Sleep disordered sleeping

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is when the airway becomes completely blocked and breathing stops. It is estimated that as many as 22 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea.

As you begin to relax, the tongue and soft tissues at the back of the throat partially or wholly block your airway. Breathing becomes shallow, and may halt completely for a few seconds or a minute or two. This deprives the heart and brain of oxygen. Your brain senses danger, and sends a surge of adrenaline to jolt your body into action. You jerk, snort, or choke into wakefulness. Then the process repeats – potentially dozens of times each hour.

A long list of health issues is linked to OSA, including:

Major causes of sleep apnea actually include poor alignment of the jaw, and of the tongue, which are all things a biological dentist can help treat.
